Congratulations! You are now a college graduate. Take some time to celebrate, but don’t wait until the crush just before graduation to begin your career journey.

This is what everyone else does. You’re not everyone else; you are the CEO of Your Own Life and are proactive.

With just a few weeks until graduation in May, many of my current students (and former ones too) are feeling insecure about the job market. I don’t blame them. When I told my students that a company received almost 1500 resumes for a senior-level marketing job, they were shocked. Those numbers can be even higher for first-time internships and entry-level jobs.

So, what can you do to land your first career position? Try these 7 things you can do right now to market yourself and take charge of your career and professional development.

  1. Do a due diligence on your LinkedIn profile — and challenge yourself to get your profile to 100%. Then, be sure to stay active by sharing articles and commenting on others. Request recommendations and join groups as well to begin your online networking. LinkedIn offers case studies and best practices tailored just for students.
